Research at the Department
Laboratory techniques and medical testing methods are becoming increasingly complex and demanding. During the past decade there has been a continuous trend towards multidisciplinary testing methods in medical fields and health care. As a consequence of ongoing developments in science and technology, specialization is playing an ever-increasing role in natural and technical sciences. The Department’s core aim is to educate future professionals in health care and preventive medicine (i.e. non-medical specialists) who have a broad-based and thorough knowledge of biomedical disciplines. Bachelor studies of the Laboratory Assistant degree at the Department have proved highly popular, and analyses have demonstrated a very high success rate on the labour market among graduates. In addition to coordinating the Laboratory Assistant degree, the Department also cooperates closely with other departments at the Faculty of Medicine and provides specialist theoretical courses in biology, biomedical disciplines and specialist disciplines related to human-environmental interaction.
In accordance with the multidisciplinary profile of the Department, its staff conduct research in a range of fields, focusing particularly on these priority areas:
- Development of diagnostic methods in clinical hematology, transfusion medicine, biochemistry, and many subfields of medical microbiology.
- Clinical pharmacology and pharmaceutical metabolism.
- Genetic toxicology and the influence of genotoxic environmental factors on health.
- Environmental epidemiology and preventive medicine.
- Carcinogenic factors in the external and occupational environment.
- Influence of environmental genotoxic factors on health, use of cytogenetic methods in the prevention of diseases of civilization.
- Environmental epidemiology and preventive medicine.
- Medical physics and biophysics.
- Information and computer technology in hospital systems.
