About the Institute of Emergency Medicine
The Institute of Emergency Medicine at the Faculty of Medicine was established on 1 January 2014 to teach courses in military surgery and disaster medicine to students of the General Medicine degree programme. Teaching takes place in week-long cycles incorporating both theoretical instruction (focusing on responses to extraordinary events and disasters) and practical training (conducted in cooperation with the emergency response services in the Moravian-Silesian Region). We are the only medical faculty in the Czech Republic where emergency/disaster medicine courses form a compulsory part of accredited degree programmes.
In addition to its teaching work, the Institute also conducts research focusing on crisis and disaster management – an area which has undergone rapid development during recent years in view of the growing threat of natural disasters, bioterrorism and military conflicts. Researchers at the Institute develop new treatment and operating techniques to deal with the consequences of such events and to reduce morbidity and lethality among those affected.
