Anotation | Blastocystis is a potentially parasitic microorganism of the human gastrointestinal tract and is the most abundant representative of eukaryotes found in human stool. Pathogenicity remains a matter of debate. Controversy persists mainly because of the presence of Blastocystis even in asymptomatic patients and the unclear mechanism of possible pathogenicity. The occurrence of Blastocystis sp. is associated with various non-specific symptoms such as abdominal pain, diarrhoea, nausea or urticaria and is often diagnosed in patients with irritable bowel syndrome and ulcerative colitis. The aim of this project is to determine the prevalence of Blastocystis in selected groups of symptomatic patients. The control group will be asymptomatic subjects. Persons over 18 years of age who agree to participate in the study will be given a questionnaire focusing on their personal and travel history. Subsequently, a stool sample will be sent to the Institute of Health in Ostrava for processing. The data obtained will be evaluated using statistical methods. Finding out the prevalence and its potential association with other health problems will help to better map the situation in the Czech Republic and possible adjustment of diagnostic or treatment procedures. |
