AnotationLaryngopharyngeal reflux is one of the most common causes of chronic cough, although the exact pathophysiological mechanism has not yet been fully elucidated. The diagnosis of laryngopharyngeal reflux mainly consists 24-h multichannel intraluminal impedance-pH (MII-pH) monitoring. The interpretation of data for the proximal esophagus is not always simple and definite. The key parameter for establishing the diagnosis of laryngopharyngeal reflux is an increased number of reflux episodes above the upper esophageal sphincter. There is no uniform standard for the parameter of exposure of the proximal esophagus to acid refluxate (proximal acid exposure time %, pH < 4). In patients with chronic cough associated with laryngopharyngeal reflux, the proximal time of exposure to acid refluxate may be one of the main determinants of subjective difficulties.
