About the Department of Surgical Studies
Staff and external lecturers at the Department of Surgical Studies provide both practical and theoretical teaching in basic surgical courses for the General Medicine degree programme. Other degrees for which the Department provides teaching include the qualifications for paramedics, general nurses, midwives, radiological assistants, physiotherapists, ergotherapists, community care in midwifery, and intensive care. The Department also teaches courses for other faculties at the University, as well as contributing to the degree for biomedical technicians at the VŠB-Technical University of Ostrava. The teaching staff at the Department work in close conjunction with the other departments and institutes of the Faculty of Medicine.
The Department’s teaching cover all basic aspects of general surgery, thoracic surgery, pediatric surgery, vascular surgery, traumatology, orthopedics, urology and cardiosurgery. External lecturers include leading medical professionals whose expertise guarantees outstanding quality, alongside extensive international contacts.
Students of surgical courses can choose to specialize in particular areas, enabling them to gain a solid theoretical knowledge base and acquire practical skills in diagnosis and surgical techniques. The Department’s close contacts with the Ostrava University Hospital enable it to maximize the potential of this leading clinical centre and incorporate its expertise into practical teaching. Several key clinical departments of the hospital work with the Department, including its Surgery Clinic, Trauma Centre, Cardiac Surgery Centre, Centre for Plastic Surgery and Hand Surgery, Burn Centre, Department of Orthopedics, Department of Urology, Transplantation Centre and Operating Theatres Department.
Research at the Department focuses on a range of areas including mini-invasive operating techniques, modern diagnostic and therapeutic methods, oncological surgery, oncogynecology, liver surgery, obesity treatment and metabolic surgery, transplantation surgery, and current issues in cell technologies and stem cells. The Department’s research teams are involved in both national and international projects, and the Department organizes regular seminars and national conferences.
The Department also has close links with partner institutions in other countries – both in research and in teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
Studying at the Department of Surgical Studies
The Department of Surgical Studies provides practical and theoretical teaching of clinical courses for the other departments of the Faculty of Medicine. Teaching is provided by both Department staff and external lecturers. The Department works closely with colleagues from a number of other departments at the Faculty, particularly the Department of Intensive Medicine and Forensic Studies, the Department of Imaging Methods, the Department of Nursing and Midwifery, the Institute of Emergency Medicine, and the Department of Rehabilitation.
Teaching is provided by leading medical professionals, renowned in their individual fields, whose expertise guarantees outstanding quality.
Students from other departments also attend courses run by the Department of Surgical Studies, focusing on their own particular area of specialization.
