Doc. Tomáš Jelínek receives the Neuron Award for Promising Scientists
Doc. Tomáš Jelínek from the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Ostrava and University Hospital Ostrava has been awarded one of the most prestigious scientific honors in the Czech Republic—the Neuron Prize for Promising Scientists in Medicine.
Tomáš Jelínek has long been dedicated to the treatment of patients with hematologic malignancies while simultaneously advancing high-level clinical research. His scientific work focuses primarily on multiple myeloma and modern immunotherapeutic approaches. He is the author of numerous peer-reviewed publications in leading international journals, including the Journal of Clinical Oncology, Blood—the official journal of the American Society of Hematology—and Leukemia, published by Nature Portfolio.
“I am truly honored and deeply grateful for this award. To me, the Neuron Prize represents a kind of Czech Nobel Prize. Previous recipients in this category include scientists whom I greatly respect, such as professor Marek Mráz from Brno, my colleague from Ostrava doc. Michal Šimíček, as well as professors Radek Špíšek and Jan Zuna,” said Tomáš Jelínek from the Department of Hemato-Oncology at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Ostrava.
“Our research focuses on multiple myeloma, a malignant blood disorder. In particular, we aim to simplify and improve diagnostic procedures, as well as refine risk stratification, which may ultimately enable more personalized treatment approaches. Our goal is to develop patient-tailored therapeutic strategies that increase treatment efficacy while simultaneously improving patients’ quality of life,” added the recipient of the Neuron Prize for Promising Scientists in Medicine.
In 2024, Tomáš Jelínek also received the Physician Scientist Research Grant from the European Hematology Association (EHA), which supports excellence in hematology research. The grant is awarded to outstanding physician-scientists engaged in innovative research on blood diseases and aims to improve the diagnosis and treatment of hematologic patients across Europe. According to the Rector of the University of Ostrava, Petr Kopecký, this represents the third major award received in a short period by members of the Faculty of Medicine. “First and foremost, I would like to extend my sincere congratulations to doc. Jelínek. This award clearly demonstrates the exceptional quality of the scientific and research teams at our Faculty of Medicine,” he stated.
“Tomáš Jelínek is among our most distinguished scientific talents with significant international impact. I also greatly appreciate his active involvement—despite his young age—in educating the next generation of physicians and scientists, which is essential for the long-term stability and development of our faculty,” said Rastislav Maďar, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine.
