The night of scientists at the Faculty of Medicine
It was the thirteenth night of the scientists in the Czech Republic, the fifths event in the city of Ostrava and the third at the Faculty of Medicine. It gained a larger response, with a total of nearly 8.000 science-thirsty visitors in Ostrava and about three hundred of them passed through the gates of the Faculty of Medicine.
This event traditionally involves a popularization of science thanks to which you can look behind the scenes at scientific institutions and universities and shows knowledge, discoveries and thinking in an entertaining way. The main theme of this year's event was the "Mobility". On Friday 6th October from 5 PM, the event started even at our Faculty of Medicine.
In specialized training rooms of the Department of Intensive Medicine and Forensic Studies, the children had a chance to test whether they could be good paramedics and would be able to provide first aid. Under a professional supervision, drivers could take a chance and test themselves from the first aid following the simulated car accident. The blood supply is not only required after the car crashes. The head of the Blood Centre of the University Hospital Ostrava, associate professor Zuzana Cermakova, MD, PhD, spoke about the blood transfusions and other issues related to the blood donation. The cognitive activities related to the circulatory system were prepared in the children´s corner of the Blood Center.
Students of the follow-up master's study program in Pediatrics tested children's skillfulness in a number of motoric games.
Medical students prepared the project called Teddy Bear Hospital, where they treated their ill plush friends. This is the project that helps the children to get rid of the fear of the white coats (learn children how to be comfortable in the hospital setting.).
Both small and adult visitors could learn about the function and meaning of the small intestine at the lecture given by professor Petr Dítě, MD DSc. (Department of Clinical Studies).
Hot topic “Migration of the Population and Infectious Diseases" was presented by associate professor Rastislav Maďar, MD, PhD, MBA (Institute of Epidemiology and Public Health). Renata Zoubková, PhDr. (Department of Intensive Medicine and Forensic Studies) introduced the cognitive therapy and the importance of early mobilization in intensive care.
The Ostrava Tyfloservis, o.p.s. prepared a whole range of activities. Visitors could see the compensation and optical aids for the visually impaired and could try guiding of a blind person or become blind for a few minutes thanks to special glasses. A discussion with a visually impaired client and a meeting with the smallest guide dog was also engaging.
The Department of Nursing and Midwifery, namely the lecturer Martina Korhelikova, MSc prepared a Nordic Walking Course for the visitors, who wanted to be physically active. Jarmila Siverova, MSc, PhD racked the visitor's brain thanks to the various memory exercises. A model of an old man was prepared for time travelers, who wanted to try what could they expect in few years when getting up out of bed.
Medical students were ready to elevate and measure a blood pressure and pulse before and after physical exercise. And how does the human body look inside? This question was answered and demonstrated on anatomical models by students led by Jan Tokarčík, MD from the Department of Anatomy.
Great thanks for the successful and smooth operation of this outstanding Night of Scientists at the Faculty of Medicine belongs not only to all active participants but also to the employees and students who actively participated in the organization, as well as to the Rectorate PR and Marketing Department for the patronage of the event.
