Atherosclerosis Working Group
The Atherosclerosis Working Group is made up of a multidisciplinary team of neurologists, neurosurgeons, radiologists, and radiographers, who are mainly involved in the study of atherosclerosis in brain magistral arteries and the risk of stroke. Psychologists and cognitive-rehabilitation workers are also included in the working group, as the project examines the role of atherosclerosis risk factors in the development of cognitive deficits.
The group has long been dedicated to assessing the risk of cerebrovascular events in atherosclerotic plaques, especially in carotid arteries, using modern imaging modalities (sonography, computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging) and histopathological methods as the gold standard. Atherosclerosis of the carotid arteries represents the leading risk of ischemic stroke, and an early and adequate risk assessment of a specific patient is essential for planning preventive interventions in these arteries. Therefore, the attention of the working group for atherosclerosis research is focused on the possibility of nonpharmacological influence on both processes.
