| Anotation | The Patient Blood Management (PBM) concept is a multimodal, multidisciplinary, evidence-based approach to caring for patients who may require transfusion during hospitalisation. A key pillar of PBM is the early detection of anaemia, an established independent risk factor for perioperative morbidity and mortality. Preoperative anaemia affects approximately 30% of patients worldwide and increases the likelihood of allogeneic blood transfusion, which itself is an additional independent risk factor. The implementation of PBM is recommended by numerous professional societies, including the World Health Organization (WHO). The aim of this project is to implement PBM principles within the preoperative optimisation of patients undergoing major abdominal surgery at University Hospital Ostrava. Given the underlying disease, the extent of procedures, and patient multimorbidity, this population is prone to postoperative complications, and anaemia is likely to play an important role. |
