Cardiology in intensive care in children is a theoretical subject focused on the issue of cardiovascular disease in a paediatric patient in an intensive and resuscitating care setting. It provides an overview of the most common congenital, acquired and genetically conditioned heart and circulatory diseases, their clinical manifestations, diagnostics and treatment principles, focusing on the specifics of nursing care, monitoring and patient safety.
The aim of the subject is to provide students with systematic knowledge of cardiovascular diseases in children, including congenital and genetically-related defects, and their manifestations in intensive care settings. Students will be familiar with the pathophysiology of circulatory disorders, the principles of diagnosis and treatment, and the specifics of haemodynamics monitoring, clinical status evaluation and early recognition of patient deterioration. The subject develops the ability to apply lessons learned in nursing practice, properly interpret monitored parameters, collaborate in a multidisciplinary team and participate in the provision of safe and high quality care for a child with cardiac disease in a pediatric ICU/ARO.
