Pharmacology in paediatric intensive care is a subject aimed at understanding the basics of pharmacotherapy in a critically ill child. The subject focuses on the specifics of the effect of the drugs at each age period, the safe administration of the drugs, the monitoring of their effect and the recognition of adverse reactions in the paediatric intensive care unit from the nurse's point of view of competence.
The aim of the subject is to provide students with systematic knowledge of pharmacology in paediatric intensive care, focusing on the age-related specifics of the effect of drugs in a paediatric patient and on the safe administration of medicines within the nursing competencies. Students will get an overview of the core pharmacology groups used in critically ill children, their indications, contraindications and possible adverse events, including the principles of efficacy monitoring and safety of pharmacotherapy. The subject develops the ability to apply pharmacology knowledge in clinical nursing practice, collaborate in a multidisciplinary team and contribute to the prevention of medication misconduct in a paediatric intensive care unit setting.
