About the Department of Nursing and Midwifery

The Department of Nursing and Midwifery offers three three-year Bachelor programmes: Nursing (full-time and part-time study), Midwifery (full-time study) and Nursing/General Nurse (part-time study) in English, three two-year Master programmes: Pediatric Nursing, Geriatric Nursing and Community Midwifery (all full-time study), one Doctoral programme: Nursing (full-time and part-time study). It trains graduates to provide health care services in primary, secondary and tertiary prevention and care, to offer nursing care in illness, rehabilitation and after-treatment. Graduates are able to offer nursing care to individuals, families, groups and communities in various states of health and illness, and thus to contribute to the maintenance or restoration of health or to a peaceful and dignified death. The professional training of students is based on the scientific and research-based knowledge.

The Department of Nursing and Midwifery focuses on the development of nursing and on issues of nursing practice both from a theoretical and practical standpoint. The staff organizes international nursing symposia, professional seminars and courses in life-long learning (the certified Mentor courses, Pediatric Nursing courses, General Nursing courses). Foreign cooperation is carried out as part of bilateral contracts and Socrates/Erasmus mobility agreements. The department's staff participates in several international and research projects. The department is a member of the Florence Network for European Cooperation in Nursing and Midwifery in Higher Education.

The department teaches all nursing subjects at the Faculty, plus subjects that deal with human health and illness holistically – e.g. psychological subjects and subjects related to ethics or public health services. The clinical nursing placement is fully provided by mentors who are graduates of a certified mentor course.
